Everybody Wins! Reading Mentoring Program Orientation

Tunbridge Central School (TCS) is looking for volunteer reading mentors to spend one hour per week with students as a part of the Everybody Wins! (EW!) reading mentoring program. To find out more about becoming a volunteer, please come to the new mentor orientation at the TCS library on Thursday, September 22, from 11-11:55am.

The Upper Valley Business and Education Partnership collaborates with Everybody Wins! Vermont to facilitate this successful literacy program which encourages enthusiasm and a positive attitude towards reading. Adult volunteers from the community share good books and conversation one-on-one with elementary school students for one lunch hour per week.

Volunteers read on Mondays or Thursdays, from 11-11:55am in the TCS Library, starting the first week in October.

Christmas Shoppe October 14-16, 2011

Twenty-six vendors from five states and more than 30 local artists will be featured at the October 14-16 Christmas In October Shoppe. They will be set up in the Town Hall, the Parish House and a tent in Tunbridge Village.

The shoppe will open Friday night with a 5:30-8 p.m. Preview Party serving hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and punch (BYOB), for a donation of $10. The Art Gallery and Silent Auction of donated services and items, including vacation home stay, dance lesson, private historic tour and quilt, will open that night. A portion of auction proceeds will go to Operation Revive Royalton.

The three village venues will be open Saturday from 10-5. À la carte lunch items will be available at the Town Hall from 11-1. High Tea featuring tea sandwiches, scones, desserts and tea will be served from 1-4.

Shoppe hours on Sunday are 10-3, with lunch from 11-1.

Sale items will include bird art, blown glass, custom metalwork, candles, decorative items, dolls, goat soap, photographs, baskets, pottery, wildlife videography, woolens, books, headbands, scarves, slate products, notecards, chocolates, sterling and stones jewelry, cookies, hats, jams and jellies, silk-screened T-shirts, clothing, woven placemats and woodturned bowls, puzzles and signs.

Shuttle parking will be available from the Fairgrounds via the driveway next to the library.

The Tunbridge Women’s Group is sponsoring this second annual Christmas Shoppe fundraiser to benefit restoration of historic church buildings including the Parish House. For information call Pam Dietz at 889-3315.

School Club Hosts Back-to-School Potluck

UPDATE: Due to the storm clean up and delayed start of the new school year, the Back-to-School potluck is rescheduled for Tuesday, September 6 from 6-7:30pm. Don’t worry if you can’t bring a dish – we’ll have plenty to share!

The first day of school is right around the corner, and School Club is gearing up for another exciting year! All are welcome to join us at the Back-to-School Potluck on Tuesday, September 6 from 6-7:30pm at Tunbridge Central School. It is an opportunity to mingle with returning families and to meet new families while enjoying a meal together. In addition, each family in attendance will receive a complimentary Jump In! magazine and a Green Gift Pack courtesy of PTO Today. Bring your favorite salad, main dish or dessert to share, if you wish. School Club will provide beverages and place settings. Rain or shine.

Tunbridge 250th Anniversary Dance

This event is kid friendly, most especially for the square dancing with Harold Luce!
It’s BYOB, and we also encourage folks to BYODesignatedDriver.

It’s free, but we are accepting donations as it’s not all paid for yet.

A snack table will be provided, bring something to share if it’s convenient.

July 9th 7:30pm – 12am
Tunbridge Fairgrounds, Memorial Arena (the pulling shed)
South Entrance, follow the signs.

7:30 – 8pm, Local legend Harold Luce will lead Square Dancing with Donna Weston and Adam Boyce.

8-9pm – The Honey Bees will rock us with their “Eclectic electric harmony- inflected covers from the hive.”

9pm-midnight – The Starline Rhythm Boys will keep us dancing with their blend of Honky Tonk & Rockabilly.

 

Oral History Program Tuesday In Tunbridge

The Tunbridge Historical Society’s annual “Tunbridge Speaks” oral history program will begin at 7:45 p.m. at the Tunbridge Church on Tuesday, July 12.

The program will feature readings from the “Tunbridge Tidbits” columns that Falls Hill Road resident Dr. A.H. Reynolds wrote from about 1877 to 1900 for the Argus and Patriot newspaper in Montpelier.

Readers will share Reynolds’ accounts of such events as the tornado that took the steeple off the Congregational Church, the dead man found in a barn and the hotel’s first dance under new management.
